이명박 전 대통령이 대선을 앞둔 2007년 말 불교계 인사로부터 2억여원을 받은 혐의에 대해 검찰이 수사 중이라는 보도가 나왔다. 19일 조선일보에 따르면 검찰은 지난 14일 이 전 대통령을 소환했을 때도 이 내용을 조사한 것으로 알려졌다.

보도에 따르면 이 전 대통령은 2007년 12월 대선을 며칠 앞두고 김백준 전 청와대 총무기획관에게 능인선원 주지인 지광 스님을 만나라고 지시했다. 선원은 불교 교육기관이다. 능인선원은 서울 강남구에 위치한, 신도 수가 25만명에 달하는 국내 최대 선원의 하나로 꼽힌다.

김 전 기획관이 서울 모처에서 지광 스님을 만났고 "불교대학 설립에 편의를 제공해 달라"는 청탁과 함께 2억여원을 받았다는 게 검찰의 설명이다.

이 혐의에 대해 김 전 기획관과 지광 스님은 최근 검찰 조사에서 '돈을 주고 받은 게 사실'이라고 시인한 것으로 알려졌다.

하지만 이 전 대통령은 부인한 것으로 전해졌다. 이 전 대통령은 검찰 조사에서 "지광 스님으로부터 돈 받은 사실이 없고 전혀 모르는 일"이라고 말한 것으로 알려졌다.

검찰은 김 전 기획관 등의 진술이 구체적이어서 이 전 대통령의 뇌물 혐의에 추가한다는 방침이며 혐의가 확인되면 검찰이 파악하는 이 전 대통령 뇌물 액수는 더 늘어나게 된다. 검찰은 현재 삼성이 대납했다는 자동차 부품 회사 다스의 소송 비용 60억원을 포함해 총 110억원대의 뇌물을 이 전 대통령이 받은 것으로 보고 있다.

한편 지광스님은 2007년 학력위조 논란에 휩싸여, 스스로 허위학력을 인정한 바 있다. 지광스님은 한 언론과의 인터뷰에서 고교 졸업 후 1976년 당시 학력제한이 없던 한국일보 기자 시험에 합격했다가 입사 후 이력서에 서울대 공대 중퇴라고 기재한 것이 지금에 이르렀다면서 입산 출가한 후에도 이런 사실을 밝히지 못한 것을 참회한다고 말했다..
